The Russian Bible
The lecture focuses on the Bible's influence on the development of literary languages in Europe and Russia There are two classical models, the Catholic one and the Protestant one. An attempt to combine both of them was made in Russia. The translation of the Bible into Russian was being supervised by the Russian Biblical Society in the first quarter of the 19th century. Yet, due to the dismissal of the Society, it was never completed. It was only in fifty years from then that, under the auspices of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, a complete Russian text of the Bible was published. This text is usually called synodical. In 2011 a new translation of the Bible into the modern Russian language was published.
