Born May 1942 in Samarkand. Graduated from the Faculty of Theory and History of Arts, Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin in 1965 (a diploma with distinction). Was a doctoral student at the Institute named after I. E. Repin in 1965/1968. Defended a doctoral dissertation in 1993 ("Sculpture in Modern Urban Environment: The Role, Place and Form. Towards the Problem of Enhancement of Architectural Outlook of New Residential Areas in Leningrad/St. Petersburg"). Senior Lecturer since 1982, Associate Professor since 1988, Full Professor since 1995, Department of Theory and History of Arts, Leningrad Higher School of Art and Design named after V. I. Mukhina. 1995–2010: Professor, Head, Department of Theory and History of Arts, St. Petersburg Art and Industry Academy named after A. L. Stieglitz. Since 2010: Professor, Department of Design, Faculty of Arts, SPbU. 1997–2002: visiting professor at the French École Normale Supérieure (ENS Paris, Fontenay-Saint-Cloud) and Charles de Gaulle University - Lille III. 1997: Participant of the European Integration and National Identity Programme at Stendhal University, Grenoble III, France.
