Lia Bondarko

Born in the town of Sumy, Ukraine. Moved to Leningrad with her family in 1934. During the Siege of Leningrad was staying in the city. In 1950 was admitted to Leningrad State University. She studied at the Department of Russian Language and Literature, the Faculty of Philology. In 1955 Lia Bondarko was admitted to postgraduate studies at the Department of Phonetics and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages. Later on, she worked there first as a Junior, and then as a Senior Research Associate. In 1977 became Head of the Department of Phonetics and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages holding a Professor position. Was Vice-President of the International Society of Phonetic Sciences (ISPhS) for ten years. Was a member and then an executive-board member of St.Petersburg Linguistic Society as well as an editorial board member of the Yazyk i Rechevaya Deyatelnost' ("Language and Speech") journal.
