Soviet Architecture of the 1920s/1950s
The teaching materials for the "Soviet Architecture of the 1920s/1950s" lecture course based on the lectures by Professor Varvara Speranskaya have been developed at the Faculty of Arts, St. Petersburg State University. This lecture cycle is focused on one of the major periods in the history of modern Russian architecture. It was the time of formation of its basic framework. Two universal systems, the avant-garde one and the classical order one, are analysed. Their dialogue makes it possible to trace subsequently the historical, cultural, social and ideological background for Soviet architecture development. The issues of style formation and forms as well as the search for a new architectural image are also discussed. Most prominent projects and buildings are analysed too.
