History of Medieval Literary Russian
The course is primarily aimed at the description of historical changes in the functioning of literary and written Russian during various historical periods, from the first manuscripts of Rus' to the 17th century texts.Another objective is to show the role of Church Slavonic in the formation of the Russian literary language. The language of Old Russian texts is studied within the framework of historically developed genre forms and their modifications, the correlation between the language and the genre of old texts, their pragmatics and functions. The main sections of the course are arranged in the chronological order. The language of old texts in the history of the literary language is characterised in terms of the correlation between language and culture.
