"Commercial trend" in the 1830s Russian journalism
Press commercialisation process began in Russia in the1830s. Editions aimed at making periodicals primarily a source of income appear in the country. Such editions as A. F. Smirdin's and O. I. Senkovsky's "Biblioteka Dlya Chteniya", F. V. Bulgarin's and N. I. Grech's "Severnaya Pchela", published for mass readers and not for the elite ones, encouraged professional development of journalists and caused impassioned debate concerning the objectives and role of journalism.
