Origins of Russian journalism. The "Vedomosti" of the period of Peter the Great
The hand-written edition "Kuranty" was the predecessor of the first Russian newspaper. Issued for the tsar and his associates, it was a digest of foreign newspapers. During the reforms of Peter the Great there appeared a strong need in informing the society and opposing the anti-Russian propaganda in Europe. This resulted in Peter's decision to start issuing the first Russian newspaper since 1703. Peter's "Vedomosti" stopped being issued after the tsar's death, yet the tradition was soon carried on by the Russian Academy of Sciences.
