Architecture of the Second Half of the 11th – Early 12th Centuries
It was not at once that stone construction became popular in Rus’; at first there were numerous wooden churches build mostly according to the traditions that were still dominating in Rus’ at that time. In spite of this we know little of the early Christian wooden architecture in Rus’. Within that period temple buildings are most actively erected in Kiev. The major monastic complexes are starting to be built at that time. These include the Kiev Monastery of the Caves (Kiev Pechersk Lavra), the Klovsky Monastery, St. Dmitry’s Monastery, and St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery.
