The issue of the linguistic and "literary" status of birchbark manuscripts. Birchbark manuscripts as examples of the literary language of Ancient Rus'
The issue of the linguistic and "literary" status of birchbark manuscripts is discussed during the lecture. Birchbark manuscripts are studied as examples of the literary language of Ancient Rus' in the absolute sense of this notion (N. A. Meshchersky). Based on the published corpus of birchbark manuscripts (A. A. Zaliznyak, A. A. Gippius et al.) the characteristics are given of the language (lexis, syntax, grammar) of these birchbark manuscripts depending on the communicative pragmatics of each of the texts. Liturgic manuscripts are also studied. They are analysed as texts reflecting the interaction between the Church Slavonic liturgic language and the Old Novgorod dialect, the speech usage of Ancient Rus'. Speech formulas and set expressions of the bookish and oral, epic origin are characterised.
