Church Slavonic language in Ancient Rus'. Role of the translated texts. A general characteristic of the language situation
The place and role of Church Slavonic in the formation of the bookish written language in Ancient Rus' are discussed. The role of translated texts and their role is also discussed. First of all these are Slavonic Biblical translations from Greek which were exemplary bookish texts conforming to certain standards. Special emphasis is laid on the significance of the language and texts of the Sacred Scripture in the formation of the Russian bookish traditions. An account is given of the methods of linguistic study of translated texts in order to define the place and time of one or another translation. The language of the oldest judicial and business texts is also discussed. An account is given of the "genre and stylistic varieties" (N. A. Meshchersky) of the bookish written language of Ancient Rus'.
