Literary Russian language of the 11th/13th century Ancient Rus'. Sources. Written tradition origins
A general characteristic of the literary Russian language of Ancient Rus' is provided, the sources of its study are described. Special emphasis is laid on the specifics of the linguistic situation in Ancient Rus': since the period of the first written texts there has been an interaction between two closely related languages, Church Slavonic (the Old Slavonic language of Russian origin) and East Slavonic (the Old Russian language) of oral communication. A detailed account is given of the problem of the East Slavonic writing system establishment, the role of the Christianisation of Kievan Rus' and the written tradition of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the formation of the Russian writing system.
