This lecture is devoted to Old Russian city-states, or volosts. Their role and structure are described. Special attention is given to the Novgorod land, the Vladimir-Suzdal, or Rostov-Suzdal, land, and the Halych land. Old Russian city-states are compared to the poleis of Ancient Greece; the role of communities is emphasised.
