"And Quiet Flows the Don" by Mikhail Sholokhov. 1925–1940
Sholokhov's epic novel is studied against the background of Tolstoy's and classical epics as a synthesis of the traditions of a family saga, war chronicles, a love story and a philosophic parable. The protagonist is a Cossack Hamlet who has to choose his own way not only between the two enemies but also between good and evil in the tragic epoch when it is impossible to make such a choice.
