Born June 17, 1936 in Leningrad. Parents were persecuted for political reasons. After the rehabilitation of her family, graduated with honours from Leningrad State University (1958). Since 1979, has worked as Professor at the Department of Phonetics and Foreign Languages Teaching Methods; since 1985, Head of the Department of General Linguistics. From May 1993 to April 1994, Professor Verbitskaya performed the duties of the Acting Rector. In April 1994, she was elected Rector of St.Petersburg State University. Re-elected in 1999 and 2004. Since 2008 has been President of St.Petersburg State University. On April 26, 2010, elected Dean of the Faculty of Philology, St.Petersburg State University.
